I've had this idea for such a long time! I wanted to jazz up my Basic Legging Pattern and thought that cute little hearts down the side? I mean, super cute right? And you can use this technique on any legging pattern you have and play around with the placement of your appliques. And don't be afraid to play around with different designs, I have included a free template of the hearts I used in this tutorial but you can use any shape you want!

You could even do this to a pair of leggings you already own by taking out the inseam of the leg, adding your appliques using the steps below and resewing the leg up!

Enjoy!!

I'm using the Basic Legging Pattern available from my Etsy shop, but feel free to use any pattern you have available!

Cut out heart templates from your scrap fabric. Apply the interfacing to the wrong side of each heart!
Picture
Cut out your legging pieces according to the instructions. Apply the fusible stabilizer to where ever you want your applique to go. You should cut your stabilizer larger then the design area.

Position your appliques in whatever pattern you like and pin in place!

I set my machine to a zig zag stitch and shorten the width and the length of the stitch slightly. You could tighten it up more then I did, but I wanted a patchwork effect so I left it a bit looser.

Slowly stitch around each heart. Take your time and when sewing the curves of the heart, stop and lift the pressor foot and shift to follow the edge smoothly.

And don't worry if it's not perfect, it'll add to the patch work charm ;)

Continue for all your appliques!
Picture
Continue sewing the leggings together as usual, by placing the two pieces together, right sides facing and sewing up the front and back rise as in the picture above.

Sew around the leggings inseam, making sure to match up the seams.

Apply the elastic to the waistband by stretching as you sew. Your elastic should be about 1.5" smaller then your child's waist measurement.

Fold the elastic so that it's hidden and stitch in place using a zig zag stitch!

Hem each leg opening by overlocking/zig zag stitching around the raw edge, fold up 1/2" and sew in place with a zig zag stitch!
