Happy Sunday everyone!

Weekends are usually the time when I take a few hours and sew something just for me or my wee one. I love taking the time to make something fun and creatively fulfilling.  For this weekend project I have a wedding to attend in a week and I was looking to make a dress that is simple and elegant. It is a small event and I thought the simpler the better. I'm pulling inspiration from Audrey Hepburn and sticking to a LBD (Little Black Dress).

Here is a quick sketch of what I had in mind.
Details: Features a bateau neckline with a semi circle skirt.
Fabric:  Ponte de Roma $8.25/Meter
Content90% Polyester, 5% Rayon, 5% Spandex
Source: Telio Fabrics, Toronto

Ponte  is one of my favourite fabrics to work with. I find it extremely easy to sew and very forgiving to any mistakes that might happen. Ponte is a little studier than a jersey/tee-shirt knit but still has great stretch. One of my favourite things about it is that there is no wrong side to the fabric because it is what they call double faced. It is flattering and really comfortable to wear.  It also has a  slight sheen to it which really helps to dress it up.

First I cut out all the pieces. There were 5 pieces in total; front and back skirt pieces, 1 bodice front and 2 bodice back pieces. You could also have back piece same as the front with no seam in the center but I like the detail. Because this dress is made from a stretch fabric, it has no closures i.e. zippers, buttons etc.
90% of the sewing was done on my Singer Profinish Serger/Overlock. Sewing with an overlock stitch allows the seam to stretch along with the fabric.
I finished all the edges with overlocking and then just stitching it down with a regular sewing machine. I slightly stretch the fabric as I sew which helps build a little give into the hems.

And Ta Da!
Finito :)

This entire dress took me about 50 minutes from start to finish to cut out, sew, hem, and press.

Total cost of materials:  (Drum roll please!)
